The Amanita Muscaria mushroom is easily identifiable by its red cap speckled with white dots. This mushroom contains muscarine and ibotenic acid, which can convert to muscimol when consumed or decarboxylated during processing. The effects of consuming Amanita Muscaria can resemble those of a traditional "magic mushrooms" trip.
What does an Amanita Trip look like?
When consuming traditional "magic mushrooms," the hallucinogenic properties of psilocybin interact with serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters to induce a strong and long-lasting psychedelic experience. This experience can be positive or negative, depending on one's mental state.
In contrast, Amanita mushrooms are broken down into muscimol, which interacts with GABA receptors in the central nervous system. While the psychoactive effects of Amanita mushrooms are milder, they can vary from person to person due to the abundance of GABA receptors. A single dose of 350mg of Amanita mushrooms is roughly equivalent to 100mg of psilocybin. This dose can provide whole-body relaxation and improved sleep quality, while higher doses may lead to spontaneous sensations, visual distortions, and at times, synesthesia or hallucinations.
How is this legal?
In a similar vein to how Delta-8 THC is considered legal due to a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill, Amanita mushrooms' legal status exists due to a loophole in the Controlled Substances list. Unlike psilocybin, which is a Schedule I controlled substance and illegal to possess and distribute, Amanita muscaria, muscimol, and ibotenic acid are not listed.
As a result, Amanita mushrooms are legal at the federal level in all states except for Louisiana. Although legislative loopholes are not uncommon, they are frequently employed in many expanding industries
